I am a visual artist interested in the body, feminist strategies of representation and the history of painting. I focus on large-scale and constructed paintings, and also work with drawing and video. My work explores the embodied experiences of framing, and often depicts shapes which border and structure the body.
Bio:
Nicola Stephanie is a visual artist working in painting, drawing and video. Born in Epsom, UK, she grew up in Eindhoven, Holland, and Cambridge, UK. Her work has been shown internationally at venues including Tate Modern and the Freud Museum, London; Milwaukee Art Museum; Yale Centre for British Art and Turn Gallery in New York City, which was listed as a “must-see show” by the Art Newspaper. Stephanie has completed commissions for Tate Modern and the Royal Opera House in London and was nominated for the United States Artists USA Fellowships and the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Emerging Artist Grant (2022). She has held teaching positions as Lecturer in Fine Arts and Visual Communication at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham and Lecturer of Drawing at the London College of Fashion. She received a MFA in Painting from Hunter College in New York City (2019) and a BA from Goldsmiths, University of London (2005). She also previously studied at the New York Studio School. Stephanie currently lives and works in London, UK and the Hudson River Valley in upstate New York.
