TREES explore painting’s dependency on its own history. The series looks at painterly conventions in the European landscape tradition, with a focus on gesture and mark making. It was inspired by observations of particular brush marks recurring in paintings made generations apart. TREES are made by a process of “brush stroke sampling” - a riff on hip hop sampling, but applied to mark making. The paintings recognise processes of influence absorbed via looking and translated by the hand.

All paintings (2018) acrylic on canvas.
